Olivia farmer leaves $2 million to Renville County Hospital
Foundation
Gordon Ruebel, age 71 a lifelong bachelor farmer
from Olivia, has donated his entire estate,
a sum worth as much as $2 million, to the
Renville County Hospital Foundation and Renville
County Hospice. Relatives said Ruebel was a
retiring person who led a rich life devoted to
reading, cooking, gardening and intellectual
pursuits. He had few friends and rarely
socialized.
Except for a two years in the U.S. Army
during the mid 1950s, Gordon Ruebel spent nearly
all his life farming in the Olivia area. He
died unexpectedly of a heart attack March 25th
in his
farmhouse. Ruebel left no stipulations on
how the money should be spent, other than that
it
should be divided between the health
foundation and the hospice program. Ruebel’s
relatives
hope the money will be placed in an endowment
for helping individual patients.

Montevideo looks into reed bed pond
Montevideo City Council is looking at
options to develop a reed bed pond as
part of the $18 million
in improvements to the cities
wastewater treatment facility. The reed
beds are used in removing
phosphorus from pre-treated
wastewater. The city is seeking to
acquire about 37 acres of property
located North of Friendship Homes in
the Smith Addition industrial area for
the reed beds. The
owner of the property, the Montevideo
Industrial Development Corporation, has
indicated it is reluctant
to sell the property to the city,
because Friendship Homes may want to
expand their manufacturing
facility in this area. The City
Council is looking at dropping the reed
bed proposal and revising its plans
for the wastewater treatment plant.
The city is working to get the
wastewater treatment plant
improvements under way to meet new,

Minnesota River placed on 10 Most Endangered Rivers List
The Minnesota River has been placed on the list
of the 10 Most Endangered Rivers in America.
The placement on the list is due to plans for
the $1.6 billion, Big Stone II coal-fired power
plant.
American Rivers, a nonprofit organization
based in Washington, D.C., placed the Minnesota
River
on its 2008 list due to what it called the
threats posed by the Big Stone II Power Plant.
The reasons
for the river being placed on the list are,
damage to downstream aquatic life due to water
drawdown
on Big Stone Lake, to supply cooling water
for the coal plant, and mercury emissions from
the plant.
American Rivers placed the Minnesota River on
its list of the nation’s 10 Most Endangered
Rivers
