Driver was not alone in the van in the fatal Lakeview bus crash

Immigration and Customs Exchange special agent Jeremy Christenson said in a Lyon County District Court

hearing, that Olga Franco was not alone in the van that hit the Lakeview School bus on February 19th near

Cottonwood.  However here was no information to indicate Franco was not the driver.  Witnesses said

the other person in the van may have been Franco’s boyfriend, Francisco Sangabriel-Mendoza.  Sangabriel-

Mendoza's whereabouts are unknown at this time.  One witness said he took the boyfriend away from the

crash scene.

Olga Marina Franco del Cid, age 24 of Minneota, the woman accused of causing a bus crash that killed four

Lakeview students was indicted on charges that she used another woman's identification documents to get jobs.

Franco was charged in U.S. District Court with two counts each of identify theft, false representation of a Social

Security number and use of a false document for employment eligibility.  Franco's boyfriend, Francisco Sangabriel

Mendoza, age 29 of Minneota, was also indicted.  He is also accused of using the identification of another

person to get jobs.  A warrant has been issued for his arrest.

Franco claims that she was in the passenger seat of a van at the time of the wreck and

not behind the wheel.  Franco claims her boyfriend was behind the wheel when the van ran a stop

sign and hit the school bus on February 19th.  A State Patrol Officer testified in court that Franco was in

the driver's seat when she was extracted from the vehicle after the crash.  Franco's attorney said she

was thrown from the passenger's seat to the driver's seat upon impact, while her boyfriend was ejected

from the vehicle.  Witnesses saw a man leaving the scene of the accident, though police have no evidence

that someone other than Franco was driving the van.  Franco is also facing four counts of criminal vehicular

homicide from the crash.  The maximum potential penalties are five years in prison on each false

representation count and two years on each identity theft count.  Following the crash, Franco identified herself as

Alianiss Nunez-Morales, but immigration investigators found the real Nunez-Morales in Connecticut.

Four students were killed in the accident and around a dozen more were injured.  The names of

the students killed in the crash were:

• Emilee Olson, age 9, of Cottonwood
• Reed Stevens, age 12, of Marshall
• Hunter Javens, age 9, of Cottonwood
• Jesse Javens, age 13, of Cottonwood

A memorial fund for the families of the students killed in the crash is set up through United

Southwest Bank in Cottonwood.  The bus was hit by the van around 3:25 PM.  The bus then hit a

pickup and tipped on its side.  Thirteen students were taken to the hospital.  The bus had nearly

30 students and a driver in the vehicle.  The accident occurred at the intersection of Highway 23

and Lyon County Road 24.  The school bus was from Lakeview School.  The school bus was

South bound on Highway 23 and the van was East bound on Lyon County Road 24.  The van

impacted the right side of the school bus.  The school bus then rolled to the left and impacted

a pickup.  There was one person in the van and one person in the pickup.  The driver of the

bus was Dennis Devereaux, age 52 of Cottonwood.  The driver of the van was

Olga Marina Franco del Cid.  The driver of the pickup was James Hancock of Marshall.
